Brazilian small-cap index posts its biggest weekly fall, down 32.79%
Brazil’s SMLL small-cap index fell 32.79% in one week, its largest weekly drop since records began.
The fall followed the second-round election result confirming President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory.
Some investors had priced in the possibility of changes to economic policy, and the result triggered a sharp market correction.
The previous weekly record was a 23.41% drop in 2008, during the global financial crisis.
Smaller companies can be more exposed to shifts in interest-rate, credit and growth expectations, while lower trading volumes can magnify price swings.
The broader Ibovespa index also fell, but its 18.12% weekly decline was smaller than the SMLL’s.
Brazil’s Small-Cap index fell 32.79% in the week, its largest weekly decline on record, according to a study by Elos Ayta.
The drop exceeded the previous record, a 23.41% fall in October 2008, by 9.38 percentage points.
The report linked the decline mainly to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory in the second round of Brazil’s election.
The Small-Cap index fell more than the Ibovespa, which lost 18.12% over the week.
The report said smaller companies can be more sensitive to expectations about interest rates, credit and economic growth, while lower share liquidity can amplify price swings.
