Cédric Wermuth cleared to run for Aargau despite move to Lucerne
Aargau Social Democrats approved Cédric Wermuth’s parliamentary candidacy for Switzerland’s 2027 federal elections, despite his planned move to Lucerne.
Wermuth is co-leader of Switzerland’s Social Democratic Party and has represented Aargau in the National Council since 2011.
He is moving from Zofingen to Lucerne with his family, but says his political home remains Aargau.
Wermuth will be second on the party’s 16-person list, behind National Councillor Gabriela Suter.
Swiss law allows National Council members to live outside the canton they represent, and Aargau’s party has also waived its 12-year term limit for Wermuth.
The party also nominated Simona Brizzi for the Senate, where she would seek to win back a seat the Social Democrats lost in 2019.
The elections are due in autumn 2027, when current senators Thierry Burkart and Marianne Binder-Keller are also expected to run again.
The Aargau SP delegates unanimously approved Cédric Wermuth’s candidacy for the National Council in the 2027 federal elections.
Wermuth will live in Lucerne at the time of the election, after moving from Zofingen with his family.
He is second on the Aargau SP list, behind Gabriela Suter and ahead of Simona Brizzi.
Wermuth has been a National Council member since 2011 and is seeking a fifth term.
The delegates also unanimously nominated Brizzi to run for the Council of States.
