Menghai named China’s largest standardized export tea base
China’s customs authority designated Menghai County a major export tea base on October 30.
The county is in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province, a region known for Pu’er tea.
The new base covers 757,000 mu of tea gardens, making it the largest standardized export tea raw-material base in China.
Previously, registered tea gardens in Menghai were scattered and managed to differing standards, limiting the supply of tea suitable for export.
The base brings eligible gardens under unified customs oversight and applies shared rules for cultivation, farm inputs, pest control, safety checks and product tracking.
Officials say this should increase export supplies and lower compliance costs for tea businesses, while helping farmers earn more.
Customs officials say they will improve the oversight and standards system and support the base’s operation as tea exports expand.
