Akol Akon agrees transfer worth up to $2.5 million to Colorado Rapids

Sydney FC winger Akol Akon has agreed to join Colorado Rapids in a transfer worth up to $2.5 million.

The 17-year-old, who was born in Sydney and grew up in western Sydney, will stay with Sydney FC for one final A-League season before moving to the United States next year.

FIFA rules generally prevent players from making international transfers before they turn 18, and Akon turns 18 in May.

He also wanted another season in Australia to continue developing without transfer speculation hanging over him.

Akon has already played in an A-League grand final and represented Australia’s under-23 team, despite being nearly six years below its age cut-off.

His move puts him on a path to develop in Major League Soccer, while Sydney FC will have him for the season’s opening derby against Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday.
