Tesla targets Q2 2027 for customer cars to join its robotaxi fleet
Tesla plans to let owners add their cars to its robotaxi fleet in the second quarter of 2027, according to a company executive.
The plan involves customer-owned Tesla vehicles, including Model Ys, using software also intended for Tesla’s Cybercab and robotaxi operations.
Tesla has promised a customer-run robotaxi network before, but earlier targets for autonomous driving and a million robotaxis have not been met.
The company currently has a few hundred robotaxis in Texas and Florida, some with human safety monitors, and several dozen driverless Cybercabs in Austin.
Legal permits, insurance and vehicle hardware remain obstacles to using customer cars as driverless taxis.
Tesla’s Q2 2027 target is not guaranteed; the company would still need to clear those hurdles, and its past deadlines have slipped.
Tesla says customers may be able to add their vehicles to its robotaxi fleet in the second quarter of 2027.
The timing was given by Tesla vice-president for Autonomous Driving Ashok Elluswamy during the company’s third-quarter earnings call.
Tesla says customer vehicles would need software, geofence access and fleet management to operate autonomously in the service.
The Verge notes that regulatory permits, insurance and vehicle hardware could pose obstacles.
Tesla has previously set ambitious deadlines for autonomous driving and robotaxis that have not been met.
