Alexander Schweitzer to take over Germany’s Labour Ministry

Alexander Schweitzer, a Social Democratic Party politician and former premier of Rhineland-Palatinate, is set to become Germany’s labour minister.

He will replace Bärbel Bas, who resigned from the ministry and her role as SPD co-leader on Monday.

Bas said she needed time to grieve after the death of her stepdaughter and could not fully carry out her government and party duties.

She also cited public attacks, including from members of the coalition partner, the Christian Democratic Union.

Schweitzer led Rhineland-Palatinate from July 2024 until May 2026, when his party lost the state election to the CDU.

He has supported state help for workers and families and opposes cuts to pension entitlements for people who have paid contributions for 45 years.

He will need to balance the positions of the SPD and the CDU in the coalition; the sources do not say when the appointment will take effect.
