Betty of Osaka show pub Betty's Mayonnaise dies

Betty, the longtime manager of Betty's Mayonnaise, has died in Osaka, Japan.

The show pub opened in the Minami district in 1985 and became known as an early venue of its kind.

Comedian Momoko said Betty was like family and recalled years of friendship, travel and celebrations with her.

Singer Masanori Sera also mourned Betty, remembering her as a fellow student at Osaka University of Arts.

Betty performed on television in the Kansai region and released a record in 1996 produced by Southern All Stars' Keisuke Kuwata.

A conversation with Kuwata is credited with giving rise to the Japanese term “newhalf”, used for transgender women and male-to-female performers.

Tributes from friends highlight Betty's lasting ties to entertainment and to people who knew her.
