Clashes erupt outside National Guard site near Kyiv

On November 2 and 3, a crowd gathered outside a National Guard site near Kyiv after social media claims that about 40 people were being held in its basement.

The National Guard said the building in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka was a temporary deployment point, where newly mobilized men and servicemen who had left their units without permission were held.

Four servicemen were taken to hospital; the National Guard said they had been detained after leaving their unit, while some people at the scene accused guards of beatings.

The crowd threw objects and tried to stop a bus carrying servicemen, and gunshots were heard during the clashes.

Ukraine’s presidential chief of staff, Kyrylo Budanov, went inside the building and later said the servicemen there needed hospital care.

A Ukrainian lawmaker said there were deaths and serious injuries, but that claim was not confirmed by the other account.

Authorities are investigating what happened, and the National Guard said anyone found responsible for illegal violence would face punishment.
