Extremadura’s olive oil awards recognize producers across five categories

Extremadura’s 2026 Extrema Selección awards recognized regional olive oils at a ceremony in Mérida.

Alguijuela won the small-producer category, Maimona the large-producer category and Vieiru the organic category.

Nuestra Señora del Salobrar received awards for conventional oil and cooperative-produced extra virgin olive oil, according to two accounts of the winners.

A local account says the Jaraíz de la Vera cooperative also received a prize for its mill master, giving it three distinctions, while the other accounts list two.

The awards highlight a sector with about 300,000 hectares of olive groves, around 70,000 farms and roughly 150 mills in the region.

Extremadura averages about 65,000 tonnes of extra virgin olive oil per season and is Spain’s third-largest producing region.

The sector faces pressure from production costs and changing prices, while its oils are also sold in international markets.
