Chinese start-up shows EUV light-source prototype for chipmaking

Shanghai-based start-up Langdao Silex displayed an EUV light-source prototype at an industry fair in Shanghai.

EUV, or extreme ultraviolet, light is used in advanced chipmaking, and the light source is a key part of the lithography system.

The prototype is an early step in China’s push to build chipmaking equipment at home.

The company said 90 per cent of the machine’s components were localised, with most core parts developed in-house.

Its output is still far below what chipmaking needs: one account said it delivers more than 15 watts, while lithography requires hundreds of watts.

Mass production is estimated to be three to five years away, so the prototype has not yet reached industrial use.

The milestone matters because it shows progress toward domestic equipment, but the power gap and wait for production remain.
