Muffato opens cashier-free supermarket in Curitiba

Grupo Muffato is opening a cashier-free supermarket on Wednesday in Curitiba, Brazil.

The new Muffato GO store is in the city’s Centro Cívico area, opposite the Shopping Mueller.

Cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence track items as customers take them from shelves and add them to a virtual basket.

The system can also identify weighted goods such as fruit, vegetables and bakery items, so shoppers do not need to weigh or label them.

Customers can pay through the app or at exit kiosks, without scanning each product; kiosks accept Pix, cards and, according to one account, meal vouchers.

The store builds on Muffato GO, which first opened in Curitiba in 2022, and is part of the group’s push to use more artificial intelligence in physical retail.

The company says the technology can also flag products running low, helping staff restock shelves.
