Nasdaq and chip stocks rebound, but rate fears limit gains
US technology stocks rebounded on Friday, led by chipmakers recovering from a steep selloff the day before.
The Nasdaq rose 1.09% and the S&P 500 gained 0.31%, while the Dow fell 0.46%.
The selloff followed concerns about tighter AI and data-centre rules after Democrats won the US midterm elections.
Chip shares including AMD, Nvidia and Micron rose, and the semiconductor index gained about 4.2%.
The rebound did not erase the week’s losses: the Nasdaq and S&P 500 both fell for a fourth straight week.
US employers added 165,000 jobs in October, well above forecasts, and unemployment fell to 4.1%.
Stronger jobs data increased expectations of a December rate hike, which could make borrowing more costly for businesses; investors’ outlook for rates remains a concern.
US stocks ended mostly higher on Friday, November 6, as chipmakers recovered from the previous session’s steep losses.
The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.09% to 24,579.42, while the S&P 500 gained 0.31% to 7,376.86.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.46% to 51,285.73.
Despite Friday’s gains, the Nasdaq and S&P 500 each recorded a fourth consecutive weekly decline.
Stronger-than-expected US jobs data reinforced expectations of a Federal Reserve rate increase and trimmed some chip-sector gains.
