Bullfighter Andrés Hernando died at 88 in a road accident on Monday in La Colilla, Ávila province, where he lived.

His car collided with a passenger bus on the N-110 shortly before 6 p.m.; the driver and all 34 passengers were unharmed.

Hernando was born in Segovia province and became a leading bullfighter in the 1960s and 1970s.

He took the alternative, the formal step to become a professional bullfighter, in Segovia in 1962 and later performed in Madrid and Barcelona.

He went through Las Ventas' main gate three times, a distinction awarded for a strong performance, and retired from bullfighting in 1974.

He later worked as a bull breeder and remained linked to the sport.

The Civil Guard is investigating the cause of the crash.
