French navy seizes 8.6 metric tons of drugs in Caribbean and Atlantic

The French navy seized about 8.6 metric tons of drugs in several operations in the Caribbean and Atlantic between October 4 and 13.

The seizures included nearly 6.9 metric tons of cocaine and 1.7 metric tons of marijuana.

The largest haul came from an unflagged fishing boat intercepted in the Atlantic on October 8 as it began a transatlantic crossing.

Five people were arrested in connection with that operation in Martinique, a French overseas territory.

Other seizures involved a speedboat stopped with help from Colombia's navy and a Venezuelan fishing boat.

The operations involved cooperation with other countries' navies, including Colombia's.

Authorities have not stated what will happen next in the cases.
