Cybersecurity Issue Disrupts New Mexico Hospital Network

The University of New Mexico Health System faced a cybersecurity issue on Monday, disrupting care in Albuquerque and across its clinics.

The network told people not to go to its main hospital and canceled appointments at more than 30 clinics.

It diverted ambulances to other hospitals, leaving New Mexico without a department able to treat the most serious injuries because UNM runs the state’s only Level 1 trauma center.

Other providers, including Presbyterian Healthcare Services and Lovelace Health System, coordinated to take additional patients.

Some employees said computer messages claimed data had been stolen, but the health system did not confirm what happened or what information may have been affected.

Hospitals and clinics began reopening in phases later that day, while the incident remained under law enforcement investigation.

The disruption matters because the network handles about 100,000 emergency visits each year, and hospitals rely on digital systems to deliver essential care.
