Turkey’s health minister urges students to innovate and says 38,000 staff will be hired

Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu urged students at Bartın University in Turkey to invent and create during a speech at the university’s academic year opening.

He said Turkey has the knowledge, skilled people and infrastructure needed to develop new ideas, and that health care has advanced greatly over the past 25 years.

Memişoğlu also argued that the country should build on its health-focused traditions and that young people should work together despite their differences.

He said the Health Ministry’s main task is to help people stay healthy before they become ill, rather than only treating disease.

He urged people to quit smoking, saying the ministry provides free medicine to those trying to stop.

In response to a question about midwives, he said the ministry plans to recruit 38,000 non-physician staff and enough midwives.

He asked midwives to support pregnant women, but gave no timetable for the hiring.
