Police arrest Moroccan man after wife signals for help in São Paulo

São Paulo military police arrested a Moroccan man on suspicion of domestic violence in Vila Maria, in the city’s north.

His Moroccan wife had a baby with her when she used a silent hand signal to ask for help as officers arrived.

A United Nations staff member who supports refugees had contacted police after receiving the woman’s request for help.

The woman repeated the signal away from her husband and told officers she did not speak Portuguese.

The signal was created in 2020 by the Canadian Women’s Foundation to let people seek help discreetly in situations of violence.

She said she did not want to return home that day, and officers stayed with her to provide support.
