Four French MPs sanctioned over July Assembly confrontation

The National Assembly sanctioned four opposition MPs on October 14 over a confrontation during a July sitting.

Three France Unbowed MPs—Matthias Tavel, Alma Dufour and Farida Amrani—and Green MP Benjamin Lucas-Lundy were sanctioned.

The dispute began when Hélène Laporte confused two MPs while chairing a debate on a proposed law about presumed self-defence for police officers.

Laporte had given the floor to Green MP Sabrina Sebaihi, but Amrani said she wanted to raise a procedural point.

Amrani objected that people of the same skin colour should not be treated as interchangeable, and MPs accused Laporte of racism; Laporte later apologised.

The Assembly’s bureau issued three formal reprimands and one pay penalty: three MPs received reprimands, while one lost a quarter of their parliamentary allowance for a month.

The sanctions matter because the MPs said they were being punished for taking part in the heated exchange, while the dispute centred on accusations of racial bias in parliament.
