TV Asahi apologizes for commentator’s remarks about homeless people

TV Asahi’s president apologized for remarks about homeless people made by commentator Toru Tamagawa.

Tamagawa made the comments on October 22 during a live broadcast of the morning program Hatori Shinichi Morning Show.

The discussion was about hair loss, and Tamagawa linked homelessness and poor living conditions to baldness and infrequent hair washing.

Tamagawa apologized on air at the end of the program and said he regretted his words.

The network said the remarks could encourage discrimination and prejudice and that it took the matter seriously.

TV Asahi said it had strongly warned program staff and would work to ensure appropriate broadcasts in future.
