Indonesia says YouTube and Meta platforms pose high risks to children
Indonesia’s communications minister, Meutya Hafid, said YouTube and Meta platforms are high-risk for children under the country’s risk assessment.
The platforms named include YouTube, Instagram and Threads.
The government says they should not be used by children while they carry that rating.
Platforms could lower their risk rating by making changes, Meutya said.
The government wants platforms to assess their own services and display suitable age limits, similar to film ratings.
A government regulation on protecting children online is intended to encourage measures including age verification.

What people are saying
We consider the YouTube platform high-risk, which means it should not be for children. We also consider all platforms in the Meta group, including Instagram and Threads, high-risk, so they should not be for children.
What we ultimately want is not only to delay children’s entry into high-risk areas, but for high-risk platforms to reduce their risks so they can access Indonesia’s digital child market.
We want them in the future, as in the film industry, to be honest in assessing themselves: ‘We are suitable for ages 17 and up or adults,’ or ‘We are suitable for children.’
