Army officer arrested after three firebombs found in car after crash

A crash in Somma Vesuviana led police to find three Molotov cocktails in one of the cars.

The collision happened on Via San Sossio and involved a 45-year-old Italian Army officer and a car carrying a married couple.

One bottle was broken, another partly emptied, and the third ready for use, according to the reports.

Bomb-disposal experts secured the area so emergency workers could treat those injured.

The officer was arrested on suspicion of illegally possessing explosive material and transferred to Poggioreale prison.

He was treated for injuries and given a 10-day recovery prognosis; the couple was unharmed and described as unconnected to the case.

Prosecutors in Nola have opened an investigation, and the cause of the crash is still being examined.
