Trump approval falls to 31% as Democrats lead in midterm poll

A Reuters/Ipsos poll puts Donald Trump's approval at 31%, the lowest level recorded in either of his presidential terms.

Democrats lead Republicans 47% to 35% when registered voters are asked which party they would choose for Congress.

The poll comes ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections, when all House seats and 35 Senate seats are up for election.

This national preference poll does not account for differences among states and districts, which determine control of Congress.

High gasoline prices and concern about the economy have weighed on public opinion since Trump ordered strikes on Iran alongside Israel in February.

Sixty-eight percent of respondents disapprove of Trump's handling of the economy, including 37% of people who identify as Republicans.

If Republicans lose either chamber, Trump's agenda could face obstacles during the final two years of his term.
