Three men arrested over suspected building work on protected land in Tláhuac

Three men were arrested over suspected unauthorized construction on conservation land in Tláhuac, in southeastern Mexico City.

The arrests took place on November 1 after local ejido authorities alerted police to construction work at Paraje Pozos.

Environmental officials confirmed work was under way when police arrived with staff from the city’s environment department.

The men, aged 26, 39 and 56, were taken to a prosecutor’s office, which will determine their legal status.

Prosecutors are investigating possible environmental offences, including occupation of conservation land and a change in its permitted use.

Conservation land makes up about 59% of Mexico City and helps protect water supplies, biodiversity and the local climate.

The investigation is continuing, with specialists in areas including environmental impact and architecture asked to assist.
