L’Oréal sales rise as luxury rivals lose momentum in China

L’Oréal reported 7.7% comparable sales growth in the third quarter, with revenue of €11.561 billion.

The French cosmetics group said demand for perfumes and skin and hair care helped drive growth, especially in China and emerging markets.

Sales in China grew at a double-digit rate, supporting L’Oréal’s luxury division.

By contrast, Hermès and Kering lost momentum as weaker Chinese demand and the war in the Middle East weighed on sales and tourism.

Hermès’s sales rose 4.3% to €4.1 billion, slower than in the previous quarter and below analysts’ expectations.

Kering’s sales fell 1%, while Gucci revenue dropped 6% amid weak demand in China and Japan.

L’Oréal expects to outperform the market this year, though at a slightly slower pace; no further outlook was given for Hermès or Kering.
