Spain’s €750 million loan will fund 40 trains for Morocco
In February 2025, Spain approved a repayable loan worth more than €750 million to help Morocco buy 40 trains.
The funding is part of a Spanish scheme that lends money for overseas projects involving Spanish companies; it is not a grant that Morocco receives without repayment.
CAF, a Spanish train maker, was chosen to supply the trains, which are designed to run at up to 200 km/h.
They are intended to connect major Moroccan cities and improve the country’s railway network.
The project is linked to Morocco’s transport plans ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
The loan is one part of wider Spanish investment in Morocco, which includes other forms of funding and cooperation.
The sources do not say when the trains will be delivered or when repayments will begin.
