Egyptian actor’s grandson sues over 12 phone lines registered in his name

Abdel Halim Mohamed Kamal El Shenawy says 12 mobile lines were registered in his name without his knowledge in Egypt.

He is the grandson of late Egyptian actor Kamal El Shenawy and says he found the lines by chance while checking his details through the telecom regulator’s app.

Some of the lines were linked to electronic wallets, and he says he did not agree to the registrations or sign contracts.

He has sued a mobile phone company and is seeking 10 million Egyptian pounds in compensation for the harm he says this caused.

The case raises concerns about customer identity checks and personal data protection, since lines registered to someone can be linked to financial services or criminal activity.

A previous case in Egypt involved a student who was sentenced in absentia after a phone line registered in his name was used in a drug trafficking case.

A Cairo economic court is due to hear the case on November 2, while authorities are investigating and may examine the company’s customer records.

The registration of 12 mobile phone lines and electronic wallets in the name of the late actor Kamal El-Shennawy’s grandson without his knowledge or consent is a legal issue of great importance relating to the protection of personal data and the extent to which telecommunications companies comply with legal and regulatory controls when registering mobile lines and activating related services.

The mere appearance of lines registered in a person’s name does not necessarily mean that they bear criminal responsibility for any acts committed using them; criminal responsibility is personal and is subject to the assessment of the investigation authorities and the court in light of the evidence and facts.
