Brazil Central Bank approves new safeguards on credit offers

Brazil’s Central Bank approved three rules to strengthen protections on credit offers and reduce excessive household debt.

They require financial institutions to give customers more information and safeguards when offering loans.

From March 31, 2027, customers will be able to block active credit advertising, and some financially vulnerable customers must give clear prior permission before receiving offers.

Those offers for vulnerable customers must aim to improve their finances, such as through debt renegotiation or moving to better terms, and cannot provide new money.

From July 1, 2027, institutions must provide a dashboard consolidating customers’ debts and showing how they affect their ability to repay.

The rules also cover credit offered through Pix, but the available details do not explain those requirements.

The measures come as debt has become an issue in Brazil’s 2026 presidential campaign, and the new rules are due to take effect in 2027.
