Cold front brings rain and possible snow to 1,200 metres in Switzerland

A cold front is expected to cross Switzerland on Wednesday, bringing strong winds, thick cloud and widespread rain.

Colder air will move in during the day, lowering the snow line from about 2,500 metres in the morning to around 1,500 metres by evening.

A few snowflakes could fall as low as 1,200 metres overnight, though rain and snow are expected to ease by then.

Above 2,000 metres, many areas could receive 5 to 30 centimetres of fresh snow, with more in some places.

This is not expected to be a winter arrival in the lowlands, where icy or snow-covered roads are not forecast for now.

Drivers who travel early or go to higher elevations should start planning to fit winter tyres; a common guide is temperatures below seven degrees.

Thursday is expected to bring more sunshine, before unsettled, windy weather returns from Friday and further fronts pass through the weekend.
