Lower Water Levels Reveal the Remains of a Sunken Village in Indonesia

Falling water levels at Karian Reservoir have revealed the remains of Somang village in Indonesia.

The village is in Lebak district, Banten, and its buildings had been submerged beneath the reservoir.

The water has fallen during a prolonged dry period linked to El Niño.

El Niño can reduce rainfall, but local rain, water flowing into the reservoir and water use also affect its level.

Karian Reservoir supplies water to nearby areas, including Jakarta, so changes in its water level matter to communities that depend on it.

Residents continue their daily lives around the reservoir, and people have crossed areas newly exposed by the falling water.

The exposed ruins highlight concerns about drought and water management as dry conditions continue.
