Indonesian MP Gives Business Capital to Shopkeeper Who Sells in Party Uniform

Maskina runs a small business with his wife in Sumenep, East Java, Indonesia.

He is also a supporter of the PDI Perjuangan party and often takes part in local party activities.

He keeps selling in his party uniform after those activities, though customers may hold different political views.

Maskina says he wears it out of pride, not to attract attention or seek help.

MP Said Abdullah gave him business capital because he was moved by Maskina’s commitment.

Maskina plans to use the money to expand the family shop and his tailoring business, which he has run since he was young.

Honestly, I did not expect to receive this kind of attention. My habit of wearing the party uniform, even when trading, was not meant to attract attention, much less to get assistance; it is simply a natural calling.

His pride in being in the party, wearing the PDI Perjuangan uniform while trading after party activities, is something we rarely see today. For Maskina, being in the party is a space for self-expression; for him, it is a calling of the heart, and that is what moved me.
