Indonesia to Distribute Subsidized Fertilizer Through Village Cooperatives

About 8,000 village cooperatives began operating across Indonesia on Thursday, October 15.

Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman told state fertilizer company Pupuk Indonesia to make subsidized fertilizer available through them.

The plan is to send fertilizer directly from factories to cooperatives and farmers, rather than relying on a longer supply chain.

The cooperatives may also buy farmers’ harvests, including rice and soybeans, before sending the goods to state logistics company Bulog.

The government says this shorter route should make fertilizer easier for farmers to obtain.

Around 29,000 cooperatives are ready toward a target of 35,000 by the end of the year, with 8,000 being prioritized for supplies.

Officials will monitor operations for a month and work to address problems, while the cooperatives are gradually stocked with subsidized goods such as fertilizer, rice, cooking oil and LPG.
