Barcelona loosens parking rules for new homes in 28 municipalities

The Barcelona Metropolitan Area approved new parking rules covering 28 municipalities.

Under the change, some new homes in central areas will no longer have to include the garage spaces previously required.

New protected homes can have no spaces or up to one per home, while free-market homes must have at least one space for every four homes, with up to two for larger homes.

The policy is intended to make new homes quicker and cheaper to build, as underground excavation and construction can be costly and slow.

It is also meant to reduce reliance on private cars and support public transport.

Its effect on housing prices remains uncertain, as the rules have been approved but their impact on costs and prices has yet to be established.
