Spain approves changes to survivor pensions and social benefits
Spain’s government approved a decree changing several social benefits on 20 October.
The package includes wider access to survivor pensions for some unmarried couples who have children together or can show five years of stable cohabitation.
It also strengthens financial support for people on leave because of gender-based violence, with payments set at 60% of the calculation base for the first 20 days and 75% from day 21.
The measures bring together proposals that had been pending or had not been agreed with employers and unions.
The decree also covers other benefits, including support for children with serious illnesses and advances when child maintenance is unpaid.
Parliament must validate the decree within 30 days, while Spain is approaching general elections scheduled for 29 November.
Spain’s Cabinet approved a decree-law on 20 October 2026 bringing together changes to survivor pensions and other social benefits.
The measures include extending access to survivor pensions for some unmarried couples and strengthening sick-leave benefits for victims of gender-based violence.
The package also includes medical leave for disabling menopause, changes to support for children with serious illnesses and higher advances for unpaid child support.
The Government approved the package without an agreement with trade unions and employers.
The decree-law must be confirmed by Congress’s Permanent Deputation within 30 days.
