Driver crashes while fleeing police in Niederuzwil

A 37-year-old driver fled a police stop in Niederuzwil, in Switzerland's St. Gallen canton, shortly after midnight on Wednesday.

A police patrol had followed him after he passed at excessive speed, and he drove on after being told to stop.

His car hit a streetlight and stacked garden pallets before coming to a halt.

Police deemed the driver unfit to drive and took a blood sample.

Officers also took his driving licence on the spot.

The damage to the car, road infrastructure and pallets was more than 10,000 Swiss francs.

The driver will be reported to the St. Gallen cantonal prosecutor's office.
