Thallys Braga’s book explores class, family and sexuality in Rio de Janeiro
Journalist Thallys Braga’s first book, “Filho,” recounts his childhood in Rio de Janeiro and his relationship with his mother, Luciana.
She worked as a domestic worker and nanny for wealthy families, and the contrast between their lives helped Braga understand class inequality.
Luciana struggled financially and with health problems, and died at 41 after a heart attack.
Braga also describes her affection for him alongside violence at home and her rejection of him when he came out as gay at 13.
He writes about moving into a more privileged social world as an adult, while feeling that he no longer fully belongs either there or in the poor suburb where he grew up.
Braga says he asked his grandparents not to read the book because some passages could reopen painful memories.
The book has been published by Companhia das Letras.
Journalist Thallys Braga’s first book, “Filho,” explores his childhood in Rio de Janeiro, including poverty, family violence and his sexuality.
Braga describes growing up in the city’s suburbs while his mother worked as a domestic worker and nanny in wealthier neighborhoods.
His mother, Luciana, was both loving and violent, and died at 41.
Braga says his family reacted badly when he came out as gay at 13, though his grandparents later treated his sexuality with naturalness and humor.
The book also reflects on Braga’s rise in social class and his sense of belonging fully to neither his past nor his present.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
I don't want them to suffer even more by reading the descriptions of the day of her heart attack and the financial difficulties we faced in my childhood
I also don't think they need to know how many boys I offered oral sex to as a teenager
They called me a faggot, Mom
Then become a man, damn it
