Ethiopia appoints interim government in Tigray ahead of planned elections
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed a temporary government in Tigray on Friday.
The northern region had been controlled by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, or TPLF, which launched an offensive against federal forces last month.
Ethiopian troops pushed back the uprising and retook major cities, including the regional capital, Mekelle.
The six-month administration is meant to prepare free elections and create a more stable political climate.
It will also work to repair damaged infrastructure and help displaced people return home.
Tigray is still recovering from the 2020-2022 war, which killed hundreds of thousands, and renewed fighting has raised fears of wider conflict involving Ethiopia and neighbouring Eritrea.
The TPLF has not yet responded, and the promised elections are expected within six months.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed a caretaker administration in Tigray to prepare for elections within six months.
The move follows renewed fighting between federal troops and an alliance led by the Tigray People's Liberation Front.
Abiy's office said the administration would serve for six months and seek to create conditions for free and transparent elections.
Abiy said it would also repair damaged infrastructure and help displaced people return home.
The region was still dealing with the effects of the previous war, with about 750,000 people internally displaced as of February, according to the UN refugee agency.

What people are saying
