Alaska Air Group to cut about 200 jobs amid rising fuel costs

Alaska Air Group plans to eliminate about 200 non-contract jobs as rising fuel costs and geopolitical challenges strain its finances.

CEO Ben Minicucci warned employees the airline could lose about $700 million this year if conditions persist.

The company says the cuts affect fewer than 1% of its 32,500 employees, and no frontline or non-management roles are being eliminated.

Higher jet fuel bills are squeezing US airlines, even as strong passenger demand has helped them raise fares and bring in record revenue.

The pressure comes during the US-Iran war, which the story says has lasted eight months, and is challenging Alaska’s plans to expand premium and international travel.

Affected workers finish on November 13 but keep receiving pay through December 31, with severance and other support.
