U.S. sanctions eight Canadian businesses over Iran and Ryan Wedding links
The U.S. Treasury sanctioned eight Canadian businesses over alleged help evading sanctions on Iran’s government.
The money services businesses are based in British Columbia and Ontario, and the action was coordinated with Canada’s anti-money laundering watchdog, Fintrac.
The Treasury says some of the businesses also worked with Ryan Wedding, a former Canadian Olympic snowboarder accused of leading a drug trafficking operation.
It alleges Wedding used several services to move millions of dollars in drug money through digital assets before his arrest in Mexico in January.
Wedding was taken to the United States to face drug trafficking, murder and attempted murder charges, and he remains in federal custody awaiting two trials next year.
The sanctions are part of U.S. efforts to disrupt financial channels used to evade sanctions on Iran.
