FIFA reviews peace prize after Trump controversy

FIFA is reviewing its peace prize after Donald Trump received it as the first recipient in December 2025.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the award to the US president ahead of the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington.

The award was created to recognise people whose actions promote peace and bring people together, but the FIFA Council had not approved Trump’s selection.

That decision triggered criticism, including concerns that honouring a political leader conflicted with FIFA’s rule against political interference in football.

At a meeting in Zurich, the Council sent the prize for review by FIFA’s 22-member social responsibility committee.

The committee may recommend changing the award or ending it, and is expected to report before the next Council meeting in Doha on 16 December.

No final decision has been made, and options include limiting the prize to people outside politics or focusing it on work within football.

There was a decision to review the peace prize and discuss it through the Social Committee. The other issues that arose were whether the prize should exist, how the decision to award it is made, and whether a similar prize should be awarded again. All those questions will be answered through the social committee.
