Spanish unions call housing strike for November 11

Spanish unions have registered a general strike for November 11 to protest the housing situation.

The action involves major union groups and the Confederation of Tenants’ Unions, which has helped drive housing protests.

Organizers say high rents and mortgage payments take up much of many people’s wages, while union leaders call housing prices a source of social division.

CEOE, Spain’s main employers’ group, says it will challenge the strike, arguing that its demands are not labour issues and calling it electoral.

The planned court challenge will not automatically stop the strike; the effect depends on whether a judge rules before or after November 11.

The organizers are urging workers and other members of the public to join, and the Tenants’ Union has published practical information online.

The strike is intended to put pressure on political leaders to address housing costs.
