Pope Leo XIV casts mail-in ballot in Illinois midterm election

Pope Leo XIV submitted a mail-in ballot in Illinois ahead of the US midterm elections, the Vatican said.

The Chicago-born pontiff is a US citizen and is the first pope known to vote in a US election.

US law allows citizens living abroad, including people working for foreign governments, to vote by absentee ballot.

Leo has also voted while living in Peru, where he spent more than 20 years as a priest and bishop.

The midterms will decide which party controls Congress and could affect the final years of President Donald Trump's term.

The nationwide vote is set for Nov.

3, and early voting has already begun in most states.
