Chongqing’s Kaizhou Port plans major expansion to handle more cargo

Kaizhou Port in Chongqing serves cargo moving between Sichuan, Chongqing and southern Shaanxi, despite being far from the sea.

Ships bring in goods such as African lithium ore and Australian iron ore, which are then moved by road to factories in nearby areas.

The port handled 2.74 million tonnes in 2025, nearly twice its original designed annual capacity of 1.42 million tonnes.

The region is developing the port as a link between river transport and road, rail and air routes, helping move bulk goods and connect inland businesses to wider markets.

An expansion will add four berths for ships of up to 3,000 tonnes, with designed annual capacity of 5.4 million tonnes; officials say the completed port could handle 10 million tonnes a year.

By 2030, the port aims to handle more than 7 million tonnes annually, while planned transport links and a new logistics centre are intended to strengthen its role as a regional cargo hub.
