Rupiah Weakens as Rising Oil Prices Put Pressure on the Currency

On Wednesday, the rupiah weakened against the US dollar, with reports placing it at Rp17,914 to Rp17,918 per dollar at the market opening.

The currency is Indonesia’s money, and its value can shift as global markets and investor expectations change.

Analyst Lukman Leong said rising global oil prices were adding pressure on the rupiah.

Oil prices rose after an attack targeted an administrative building belonging to Saudi Aramco in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; officials reported a small fire and no injuries or deaths.

A weaker US dollar and lower US government bond yields offered some support, while investors awaited US inflation data due later that day.

The rupiah was expected to trade between Rp17,850 and Rp17,950 per dollar, with limited further weakening possible.
