Trump says Taiwan will buy 30% of gas from Alaska pipeline
US President Donald Trump said at a rally in Wasilla, Alaska, that Taiwan had agreed to buy 30% of the gas from the Alaska project.
He said Taiwan would invest $4.4 billion in the proposed liquefied natural gas pipeline, but it is unclear whether a final deal has been signed.
Taiwan’s economy ministry, which handles energy policy, did not immediately comment.
Taiwan has already said it plans to increase purchases of US natural gas, and its state energy firm CPC signed an agreement in 2025 to buy gas and invest in the project.
The pipeline could export up to 20 million tons of gas a year and give US supplies a more direct route to Asian markets.
The project needs firm buyer agreements to secure financing, and its full cost is estimated at $44.5 billion to $54.5 billion.
Trump also said South Korea had committed $50 billion, but Seoul has said no investment decision has been made.
