Podemos and Frente Amplio clash over regional election alliances

Podemos and Frente Amplio disagree over how to unite Spain’s alternative left for the 29 November elections.

Podemos leader Ione Belarra has proposed deals with Izquierda Unida in ten regions, without including Madrid and Barcelona.

Frente Amplio, an alliance that includes Izquierda Unida, Movimiento Sumar, Más Madrid and Catalunya en Comú, says negotiations must happen together under one national framework.

Its leaders say they will not make separate deals with Podemos, though they welcome its interest in unity.

Talks have advanced in Aragón and the Balearic Islands, and parties in the Canary Islands have agreed on a joint list.

Discussions are also under way in the Valencian Community, but disputes over lead candidates and list positions remain.

The coalition-registration deadline is close, so the parties must resolve their differences quickly if they are to agree on joint candidacies.
