Societe Generale beats third-quarter profit expectations

Societe Generale reported a stronger-than-expected third quarter for July to September.

The French bank made 1.89 billion euros in net profit, up 24.1% from a year earlier and above analysts’ average forecast of 1.62 billion euros.

Strong equity trading drove the gain, with equity-market revenue up 45.9%, while fixed-income, credit and currency revenue fell 20.6%.

The results come as chief executive Slawomir Krupa works to improve the bank’s performance through cost cuts and asset sales.

Profit for the first nine months reached a record 5.37 billion euros for that period, and revenue rose 7.8% in the third quarter.

Last month, the bank raised its profitability target for 2029 as part of a new strategic plan.
