Nasdaq rises as chip stocks rebound after sharp sell-off

The Nasdaq rose as investors returned to chip and AI stocks on Monday in New York.

The rebound followed a sharp sell-off last week, when the Nasdaq and S&P 500 had their biggest weekly losses since late June.

The sell-off reflected concerns that high interest rates could slow investment in AI infrastructure, including chips and data centres.

The Philadelphia semiconductor index ended an eight-session losing streak, during which it had fallen about 15.7%.

On Monday, the S&P 500 also rose, while the Dow edged down.

Investors are now watching upcoming company earnings: Meta and Tesla are due to report on Wednesday, and SpaceX on Tuesday.

A market trader cautioned that the rebound does not mean the market is out of trouble.

Rubber bands can only stretch so far in one direction before they snap and start reversing, and you finally saw that enough is enough moment in the semiconductors after Friday's close.

Nothing changed between Friday's close and this morning's open, other than nothing bad happened over the weekend, and sentiment had gotten so negative that we were oversold to the point where a bounce was due.
