Moon asks appeal court to acquit four officials in forced repatriation case

Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in filed a petition with the appeals court hearing a case over the forced return of North Korean defectors in 2019.

The petition asks the court to acquit four former security officials, including former national security adviser Chung Eui-yong.

Moon argued that the prosecution of the officials was political retaliation and an abuse of prosecutorial power.

The case concerns the Moon government’s decision to send defectors back to North Korea against their will.

The appeal court is considering the case against the four former officials.

Its ruling will determine whether they are acquitted on appeal.
