Truck crashes into excavator in A1 work zone and catches fire

A 21-year-old truck driver crashed into an excavator in a roadwork zone on the A1 motorway near Groß Ippener in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Police said he drove into the work area almost without braking, where traffic was meant to follow a diversion around the works.

The truck and the parked excavator caught fire after the collision.

The driver was slightly injured and got out of the truck himself.

The truck was carrying flour and burned out; police estimate the damage at at least €150,000.

Because the crash and fire were inside a closed-off work area, traffic was only slightly affected and the motorway did not have to close.

Recovery work was expected to take place during the day.
