Serbia marks two years since Novi Sad station collapse

Thousands of people gathered in Novi Sad to remember 16 people killed when a railway station canopy collapsed on November 1, 2024.

The victims included children, and people laid flowers and candles in the rain.

Many people believe corruption and negligence contributed to the collapse during renovation work, though the cause has not been established in a trial.

The disaster prompted student-led protests demanding accountability and transparency that grew into a wider political movement.

Last week, the Students’ List defeated the ruling Serbian Progressive Party in parliamentary elections, bringing a change of government.

Prosecutors had charged 13 people over the collapse, but the case has stalled without a trial.

The new movement has called for a review of major investigations, including the collapse probe, and says it will work to restore the rule of law.
